New Holland and Asiatic Isles

This large format 1814 map  of Australia is by John Thompson.  It was part of his "Thompson's New General Atlas" published by Baldwin and Cradock in 1817.  The map includes Australia, New Zealand New Guinea and parts of Polynesia.

The first documented Europeans to see the coastline of Australia were the Dutch in November of 1605.  William Janszoon was the captain and navigator on the sailing ship Duyfken. Janszoon was an employee of the Dutch East India Company and was originally commissioned to explore the coast of New Guinea. The expedition left from the port of Bantam, Java. Over two dozen explorations of the region took place by the Dutch during the 17th century thus,  New Holland.  Although the Dutch rightfully lay claim to being the first Europeans to document the coast of Australia, debates over the theory of the Portuguese seeing it some 60 years earlier was first proposed by Alexander Dalrymple in 1786.  These debates in conjunction with the Dieppe maps from the mid 1500's are intriguing and in consideration of the debates raise some doubt.
